Meet the Sales team – Darren Amos
We wanted to find out more about Darren Amos, our Internal Sales Account Manager at Hi-Level, so we quizzed him about his passion for DIY and family life as well as his commitment to customer service.
1. What was your background prior to joining Hi-Level?
When I left college I worked in industrial and hotel catering as a chef. This involved everything from corporate events, private dining and theme nights to private events for major companies. Creating something from scratch for others to enjoy was really satisfying. I moved into hotel and fitness club management, then started my career in sales. Looking back I guess I’ve always been service-driven.
2. What does good customer service mean to you?
I want to make my customers feel important and listened to, because that’s how I want to be treated when I’m in their shoes. Having open dialogue, communicating regularly and keeping your promise are the basics and I hope that’s what I always deliver.
3. What’s your perfect escape?
When we visit family in Yorkshire it’s like being in another world. I can completely switch off, go walking, visit the local markets and relax. Everything is different but familiar at the same time!
4. What’s your dream profession?
I’m quite practical, so I think running my own plumbing, gas and electrics company would be on the list. I didn’t realise how valuable these trades were when I was younger, and in such short supply as I found out when I needed a plumber recently!
5. As a former chef you must be great in the kitchen. What’s your favourite dish?
It’s actually beef stroganoff – it might sound easy but there’s a knack to how you prepare the meat. Get it right and it’s absolutely delicious. And no, I’m not going to share my secret ingredient!
6. What do you do for fun outside of work?
I used to be quite competitive and enjoy golf and squash as well as eating out and going camping. My time’s taken up with the family now, but I really enjoy home improvements and try and get the kids involved when I can. Designing and installing a kitchen has been my biggest project to date. It may have taken a lot longer than it needed, but I’m pretty proud of what we achieved.
7. If you were on a desert island and could only have 3 luxury items, what would they be?
I’m not really a materialistic person, and in reality my wife would tell me what to take! I’d probably take my iPod with some rap and pop music to keep me motivated, but to honest I’d be looking forward to the peace and quiet on my own, it doesn’t happen much!
8. What do you enjoy about your role?
I like building relationships with my customers, dealing with a range of enquiries and projects, having a bit of banter, helping them and hopefully trying to make things as simple as possible. We’re not about hard sell at Hi-Level, it’s more about customer service so I’m very comfortable with that.
9. Best advice you’d give your children?
Don’t be afraid to be different and be heard, but understand and respect other people’s opinions. We’re all so quick to judge and get upset these days, but you can learn a lot from others if you can accept we’re all different.
10. What motivates you the most?
My children motivate and inspire me with their energy, they don’t stop! I love seeing them taking part in activities at their various clubs such as rugby and trying their best, that’s all I can ask as a father.
11. Last holiday?
My family and I went to Greece again earlier this year which was amazing – beautiful surroundings, great weather, traditional food and drinks and lots of culture. It’s got everything we need to relax and have fun together.
12. This will be your first IMHX. What are you most looking forward to?
I can’t wait to be with our team and meet some new people. It’s going to be a busy event but hope I’ll have time to attend one or two of the talks to expand my industry knowledge. It will also be good to shake hands with some of my customers who I’ve spoken to on the phone many times but never met in person before.
