Matt Conway is Hi-Level’s Business Development Director, having joined the company in spring 2022. His previous roles have ranged from delivery manager for Ministry of Defence and hospital infrastructure projects to rising in five years from sales rep to National Sales Manager of the structural steel division of an international conglomerate. Matt’s entrepreneurial spirit should come as no surprise. He also ran his own high-end construction firm building fabulous Grand Design homes and employing 29 staff.
Ask Matt Conway what fires him and he is quick to reply: “I’m a hunter! I love to go out and overcome obstacles, to face challenges head on.”
As director of new business Matt was brought into Hi-Level with a mission to drive, to innovate and to disrupt the industry by solving problems. That is the Hi-Level approach, and we pride ourselves that after 30+ years we are still always doing something new.
Matt is building the business case for expanding our services, leveraging our expertise throughout the construction process. We may have an outstanding reputation in designing and installing mezzanine floors, but the structural engineering knowledge that underpins the company means that we have far more to offer.
He is exploring multiple new avenues, from innovation in vertical farming to installing portal frames and cladding to supplying steel. “We can take all the risk in-house for our clients and solve their delivery problems,” he says. “We have the technical capabilities to be game-changers for them.”
In a typical week Matt might go to trade shows and networking events; he attends technical design and capability meetings; he makes cold calls and talk to dozens of people, turning over every stone to help solve their problems; he will read reports from construction news websites to politics and the latest from the financial markets so that he can understand our customers, their context and their needs; and he is often putting together quotes for £1m+ contracts.
Matt has a win-win philosophy. “I love sales because I’m a competitive person and numbers tell you how you are performing. Who doesn’t like a win? But every time, I make sure it’s a win for the customer too.”
He will advise and guide clients through their challenges so the solution they choose is what they actually need, not what they may think they want. It’s about value – ensuring clients get the best value whether that is by saving money or by paying the right price for the correct solution.
Matt puts the same effort into each job, no matter if it is a 1000m2 factory or something 15 times as big. “It’s why we get so much repeat business,” he says. “Because we are problem solvers who always take care of our customers.”
