Siôn Walton is Hi-Level Mezzanines’ Drawing Office Manager. He has more than 25 years of experience in the mezzanine industry in various roles as a Project Manager, Estimator, Surveyor and Drawing Office Manager. Siôn is currently juggling multiple roles – drawing office, project management and surveying.
Incredible variety
“Hi-Level Mezzanines was my first proper job and I have learned an immense amount since I arrived as a teenager in 1997, as a trainee draughtsman,” Siôn says. He was keen to get work experience in the engineering side of the construction sector, although he willingly admits he knew very little about mezzanines, whereas today he can look back and see how much has changed. “We’ve moved on from fax machines and phone calls to email and Teams meetings, and on site from tape measures to 3D scanners,” he says. “When I first started, mezzanines and storage warehouses were synonymous, but over the years we’ve installed them in retailers, schools, airports and factories covering every sector you can think of. The variety is incredible.”
Solving challenges every day
Because Siôn has multiple roles, a typical week sees plenty going on. He could be managing projects, speaking to clients, reviewing drawings with the drawing office or talking to the sales team. “I could be at my desk all day on a Monday, then out of the office for a day or two on site to meet customers, do a health and safety visit or carry out a survey.”
It’s a job that brings challenges every day, for example, if the team are on a new site, breaking into a growing sector, or where the mezzanine is being built in a challenging environment. “There are often complications, but I enjoy solving these because it’s our daily work, we are the nuts and bolts of the organisation,” Sion says. “It’s always hard work, but it’s great to be able to bring in members of the team for a different viewpoint to find an answer.”
Job satisfaction
Siôn has no doubt about what he enjoys most at Hi-Level Mezzanines. “It is so satisfying to deliver a completed project that a client has been looking forward to, seeing it from start to finish and working with the customer team all along the way,” he says. “I’ve been here so long that there is a real joy in working with longstanding clients who have known and trusted us for 20 years.”
Looking ahead
Siôn is fascinated by how Hi-Level Mezzanines is always developing its IT system to be more productive: “We’re making it more efficient and bringing greater automation, not just to make life easier for us but to deliver a better service for our customers.”
