Neil Woodland is Business Development Manager at Hi-Level Mezzanines, with more than 35 years of experience in the mezzanine and interior fit-out industries. His background is in mechanical engineering.
1. What major changes have you seen since the last IMHX show three years ago?
Since IMHX 2022, one of the biggest shifts I’ve seen is the expanding diversity of clients and spaces benefiting from mezzanine floors. While large distribution centres – the so-called “big sheds” – are still in high demand, we’re also seeing more enquiries for SME businesses and mid-sized warehouses. It’s encouraging to see how mezzanines are being adopted across a much broader spectrum of facilities.
2. What challenges is Hi-Level currently helping customers solve?
Many clients are grappling with rising costs and limited availability of warehouse space in key strategic locations like the Midlands. As a result, they’re exploring new regions for expansion – we’ve seen a noticeable uptick in projects across the North of England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland. Mezzanines play a critical role in making the most of these new spaces, especially when designed as scalable, single- or multi-tier solutions. Hi-Level is fully equipped to deliver projects anywhere in the UK and beyond, ensuring clients can optimise their new facilities effectively.
3. What are you most looking forward to about IMHX 2025
For me, IMHX is always about the people. It’s a fantastic chance to reconnect with existing clients while also meeting new prospects. It’s a busy few days, but a great opportunity to catch up, share ideas and explore potential new projects.
4. You see so many different projects at Hi-Level. Tell us about an interesting building, challenge or customer that has inspired you.
There have been many, but one that really stands out is a large two-tier mezzanine project we delivered a few years ago. We managed the full process from design through to completion over a nine-month period, acting as the main contractor for the mezzanine, full fit-out and additional works. The finished result looked incredible, the client was delighted and it was a truly rewarding experience to see the whole project come together.
5. And finally, outside work what is the most amazing space or iconic building you have visited … and why is it your favourite?
In the UK, I’ve always been drawn to Worcester Cathedral – it’s a stunning example of architecture spanning from the 11th to the 14th century and a place I love to visit. Abroad, the Arena di Verona in Italy made a lasting impression on me. The Roman amphitheatre is breathtaking, and the entire historic centre of Verona is equally captivating. The coffee may have been pricey, but sitting there and soaking in the atmosphere was worth every euro!
