Chris Baxter is Sales Director at Hi-Level Mezzanines and brings over 25 years of experience in the mezzanine flooring industry. He has a background in both project management and structural engineering.
1. What major changes have you seen since the last IMHX show three years ago?
Since IMHX 2022, there’s been a significant surge in demand for automation and robotics. We’ve delivered several multi-million-pound projects across sectors such as e-commerce, High Street retail and third-party logistics. The integration of mezzanine floors with advanced automation and robotic systems is becoming standard – and that momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
What’s more, Hi-Level has achieved some major milestones. Two standout moments for me have been receiving the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in 2024 – a true honour – and Hi-Level becoming an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), which has brought a renewed sense of pride and engagement across the team.
2. What challenges is Hi-Level currently helping customers solve?
One of the biggest hurdles I see is the high initial investment needed to adopt robotics solutions. Our mezzanine systems offer a flexible, scalable approach that helps clients ease into automation without the need for a massive upfront cost. Clients can start with a small mezzanine and a couple of AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), and then expand to larger or multi-tier mezzanines with fleets of AMRs as their operations grow.
3. What are you most looking forward to about IMHX 2025
IMHX is always a fantastic chance to meet people face to face and explore new developments in the industry. This year, I’m particularly excited about the conference programme – I’m looking forward to hearing insights from others in the sector, especially around evolving trends in automation and robotics.
4. You see so many different projects at Hi-Level. Tell us about an interesting building, challenge or customer that has inspired you.
As a luxury car enthusiast, I’d have to say the project we completed for Aston Martin really stands out. During the planning phase, I had the chance to visit their existing facility – my client’s office was located right in the heart of a production area. Watching the cars roll off the line during meetings was quite something! Helping them transition to a new site with two large mezzanines was just as rewarding.
5. And finally, outside work what is the most amazing space or iconic building you have visited … and why is it your favourite?
Without a doubt, it has to be the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, which I was fortunate to visit with my family last year. No photograph can do it justice – seeing it in person was a surreal experience. The white marble, the symmetry and the sheer scale of it all make it feel like something straight out of a fairytale.
